7 Indications of Engine Trouble

When you first notice a sign of an engine problem, you'll want to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics. If you put it off, the issue could soon worsen to the point that you need repairs that are much more expensive than should've been necessary. Here are seven common symptoms of engine trouble.

Power Loss

You don't necessarily need to worry if your old vehicle with high mileage has lost a small amount of power over the years. But when an engine suddenly loses a lot of power, you could be dealing with worn-out pistons or another serious problem.

Check Engine Light Turns On

If your check engine light flashes on, it doesn't automatically mean that your engine is on the cusp of failure. But you'll still want to soon visit the shop for diagnostics so that any emerging issues can be identified and resolved before getting worse.

Knocking Sound

Inadequate lubrication due to low oil could result in metal-on-metal contact causing a knocking noise. It's also possible that a knocking noise will arise if the air-fuel mixture ignites independently of spark plugs, which needs to be addressed as soon as possible.

Vibrations

When oil gets to an extremely low level, friction can cause vibrations that emerge from the engine.

Overheating

Because overheating can lead to major engine trouble, such as a cracked block, it's important to always keep your cooling system in great shape. Cooling system leaks are often to blame for overheating and should be repaired ASAP.

Engine Stalls while Idling

Fuel delivery problems are often the cause of this issue. Stalling out in traffic can put you in harm's way so you'll want to be sure that fuel delivery issues are promptly brought to a mechanic's attention.

Discolored/Excessive Exhaust Smoke

Blue-tinted exhaust smoke is a sign of an oil leak. A coolant leak can cause white smoke. Black smoke is an indication that an excessive amount of fuel is burning up.
