Common Causes of No-Start
When your car first starts struggling to fire up as easily as it should, it's best to be proactive about visiting the shop for diagnostics. By waiting, you run the risk of the problem worsening to the point that your engine won't start at all. At HESCO Automotive & Performance Center, our local mechanics are experts at accurately diagnosing problems that cause no-start. After we've pinpointed the problem, we'll get right to work on fixing it so that you can get your car back ASAP.
Car Problems that Can Prevent the Engine from Starting
One of the most familiar causes of no-start is a bad starter. The classic sign of a failing starter is a clicking noise that emerges when you turn the key, and your car fails to start. With a faulty starter, your dash lights could still turn on. Another common reason that the engines won't fire up is that the fuel filter is clogged, preventing the engine from taking in the fuel it needs to bring the car roaring to life. To avoid this problem, fuel filters should be replaced every 20,000 to 30,000 miles. A failing fuel pump can also cause no-start by preventing fuel from successfully travelling between the tank and engine. Common symptoms of a bad fuel pump include power loss, sputtering, and decreasing gas mileage. Another fuel-related issue that could prevent your engine from starting is that your fuel injectors are all gunked up. Using a fuel additive can help with getting rid of contaminants from injectors.
It's also possible that a bad battery/charging system is to blame for your car not starting. When you put a brand new battery in your car, it should work reliably for three to five years. But if your battery dies at an earlier age and not because of an obvious issue like leaving your headlights on, then your alternator could be the problem.
