7 Common Causes of a Check Engine Light Coming On

An illuminated check engine light doesn't automatically indicate that your engine is on the verge of failure. Still, it's best to play it safe and visit the shop for computerized diagnostics. This way, any emerging issues can be identified and fixed before they worsen. Here are seven common check engine light triggers.

Failing Catalytic Converter

When a catalytic converter works properly, it ensures that carbon monoxide is turned into a less harmful emission. Signs of a failing catalytic converter include poor acceleration, darkened exhaust smoke, and worsening fuel-efficiency.

Bad Oxygen Sensor

Healthy oxygen sensors ensure proper monitoring of how much unburned oxygen is present in the exhaust system. Oxygen sensor trouble can result in issues with the catalytic converter.

Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor

MAF sensors keep tabs on the amount of incoming air and calculate the quantity of fuel that should be injected with it. A sign of a bad MAF sensor is that your engine stalls shortly after you fire it up.

Failing Battery/Charging System

When there's an issue with your car battery, it can cause low voltage at the computer, which could trigger your check engine light.

Bad Ignition Coil

To create the spark needed for your engine to come roaring to life, you need healthy ignition coils. Signs of a bad ignition include misfiring, decreasing MPGs, and power loss.

Faulty Spark Plugs

Old spark plugs are prone to repeatedly misfiring, which can lead to reductions in performance and gas mileage. With vehicles built after 2000, you can often go 100,000 miles before plug replacement, while older vehicles tend to need new plugs sooner.

Loose/Missing Gas Cap

It might seem bizarre, but if your gas cap isn't on tightly, your check engine light might get triggered. It's also important that your gas cap is tight so that fuel doesn't evaporate before your engine gets a chance to run on it.

If you need engine diagnostics, be sure to bring your vehicle to a reputable mechanic.
